British politician Rishi Sunak was elected as the new prime minister of the United Kingdom after key opponent Penny Mordaunt was unable to garner the required 100 nominations from her fellow MPs,

Sunak will become the first British prime minister of Indian descent.

This afternoon, Ms. Mordaunt abruptly withdrew from the race after failing to win the support of 100 coworkers.

Mr. Sunak was able to take possession of No. 10 because he received the approval of a resounding majority of Tory MPs.

After losing the previous one to Liz Truss just a few weeks prior, the former Chancellor quickly pulled ahead in the fight for the Tory leadership.

MPs showed up in large numbers to support Mr. Sunak just hours after Ms. Truss announced her resignation last Thursday.

But when Boris Johnson formally began a stunning comeback campaign, his odds of getting to Downing Street were drastically reduced.

The former prime minister returned to London to rally support after leaving his opulent vacation in the Dominican Republic.

Mr. Johnson left the race on Sunday night.

The former prime minister maintained he had the support needed to put it to a vote among Conservative members.

But he gave up when MPs broke for Mr. Sunak at a rate of more than two to one.
