NSUKKA - Ahmed Ammani, the Enugu State Command's commissioner of police, yesterday gave the state's criminal intelligence and investigation department (CIID) the go-ahead to launch a thorough investigation to ascertain the details of a woman named Mrs. Chinyere Odoh's sudden and unexplained death, along with the deaths of her two children and two sisters.
The two kids are Udochukwu Odo, age seven, and Chukwuemeka Odo, age four, as well as Martina Ezeme and Ngozi Ezeme, the two sisters of Mrs. Odo.
On Saturday morning, the five victims were found dead in their room in Amutenyi in Obollo-Afor, a community in the Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
According to Mr. Hillary Mama, an eyewitness, the tragedy has left the entire town in a state of sadness. He spoke with our reporter over the phone.
Mr. Mama says "When Rev. Adolphus Odo's husband of the deceased returned from where he had spent the night in the early hours of the morning, he found that their doors were still closed and that his wife, two children, and two relatives of the wife were nowhere to be seen.
He searched the area for them, but he couldn't find them. They opted to shatter the doors after taking a look around, only to find the five people still inside the room, but they were all dead."
Mama continued by saying that "there was white foam in their mouths when they were discovered dead."
When asked if they suspected any wrongdoing, Mama responded "Since they are no longer alive to provide us with information about what they ate or what happened, we have no reason to suspect anything at this time. Their bodies have been sent to Enugu for an autopsy and more investigation while I speak with you right now."
Hon. Solomon Onah, Chairman of the Udenu Council, visited the family of the deceased, ordered an immediate investigation and autopsy to determine the cause of the deceased's death, .
Statement signed by the spokesperson for the police Command, Daniel Ndukwe, reads:
“The Commissioner, while describing the incident as unfortunate and expressing his condolences to the family members and friends of the deceased persons, has further directed that the investigation be thoroughly carried out and concluded within the shortest possible time.
“Meanwhile, preliminary investigation reveals that the said deceased persons went to bed the previous night and were not seen in the morning. However, their lifeless bodies were found in two separate rooms they slept in, when Police Operatives from Udenu Police Division of the Command, who swiftly responded to a distress call on the incident, forcefully opened the doors of the rooms. They were immediately moved to the hospital and confirmed dead by doctors on duty, and their corpses deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Further development will be communicated.”
