On September 29, five days after suffering a head injury after a knockout loss in Colombia, a 25-year-old junior welterweight boxer named Luis Quinones tragically passed away.
Prior to his bout against Jose Munoz on September 24 at Coliseo Elias Chegwin, boxer Quinones was undefeated (10-0). However, Quinones was knocked out of the fight with less than a minute remaining.
Videos posted online demonstrated Quinones's inability to get back up after falling after taking a hit. He was then carried on a stretcher outside the ring by medical workers.
He apparently experienced head trauma from the battle, a blood clot in his brain, and was in a coma following surgery.
Despite being put on a respirator after being pronounced brain dead on Thursday, he lived till the end.
"Cuadrilatero Boxing greatly regrets the passing of Luis Quinones, an excellent human being, disciplined and who always showed the greatest passion to this sport," Quinones' promoters said in a statement on Friday.
He added: "We would like to express our gratitude to the General Clinic of the North team, who during this time did everything they could to take the best possible care of Luis".
Munoz expressed his shock at his passing and said he never imagined "a fantasy could turn into a true nightmare."
Quinones, who left his hometown of Barrancabermeja to pursue a career as a professional boxer, was motivated by Julio Cesar Chavez. In 2018, he made his debut.
