Along with compensatory damages, he demanded $475 million in retaliation, alleging that the media behemoth had engaged in a "campaign of libel and slander" against him.
According to Reuters, Trump alleges in his complaint, which was submitted to the US District Court in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, that CNN utilized its significant clout as a preeminent news source to defeat him politically.
As of the time this report was filed, CNN had not responded to the ex-President's lawsuit, despite the fact that Trump claimed in the 29-page lawsuit that CNN had a lengthy history of criticizing him.
The lawsuit claims:
“As a part of its concerted effort to tilt the political balance to the left, CNN has tried to taint the Plaintiff with a series of ever-more scandalous, false, and defamatory labels of ‘racist,’ ‘Russian lackey,’ ‘insurrectionist,’ and ultimately ‘Hitler,'”
In the lawsuit, CNN is accused of comparing Trump to Hitler on numerous occasions, including in a Fareed Zakaria-hosted special program from January 2022 that featured video of the German dictator.
The former president announced in a statement that he would file lawsuits "in the coming weeks and months" against other significant media organizations. He also hinted that he might take legal action against a congressional committee looking into the attack on the US Capitol by his supporters on January 6, 2021.
