Asisat Oshoala of the Super Falcons and Barcelona missed out on the coveted Ballon d'Or title after UEFA named Beth Mead, Lena Oberdorf, and Alexia Putellas as its top three candidates for the 2022 UEFA Women's Player of the Year honor.
Oshoala became the first ever African woman to get the honor when she was nominated last week among a list of 20 nominees for the 2022 Women's Ballon d'Or.
The nomination for the Barcelona Femini player comes after she broke the previous record for most honors by fellow countrywoman Perpetua Nkwocha after winning the CAF Women's Player of the Year award for a record fifth time last month.
The Lagos-born star is the first African, male or female, to have received the honor so frequently.
Oshoala was at her best last season despite having limited playing time due to injuries. She was consistently on point when she played, propelling Barca to the domestic league championship.
Last season, despite missing around seven weeks due to injury, Barcelona Femeni's star forward, Super Falcons, tied with Madrid CFF's Geyse Ferreira for first place in the Spanish topflight league with 20 goals in 19 games.
She won the Pichichi for her accomplishments, making history as the first African woman to do so.
The final list, which was narrowed down to only three names before next week's award presentation in Istanbul, did not include the Falcons striker, though.
