Borno State confirms outbreak of Monkeypox in Maiduguri

With three of the four suspected samples forwarded to the National Center for Disease Control, NCDC, being proven positive, Borno State has declared that monkey pox is on the rise in the state.

In a press conference yesterday, Dr. Lawi Mshelia, director of public health at the Ministry of Health, said that "two of the cases were reported from the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, UMTH, where they are currently receiving treatment, while the other patient was reported from Biu local government area in southern Borno.

One of the patients, according to the Director, had been released from the hospital about a week prior.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has begun a campaign of sensitization to provide adequate awareness and improved prevention of diseases like monkey pox, cholera, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
