Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55, and Ike Ekweremadu, 60, were remanded and charged for transporting a child to the UK in order to harvest organs, according to a statement released by the Metropolitan Police in London on Thursday.
Sky News reports that the two have been placed back in custody and will appear in court today at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court.
According to the police, the inquiry was started when investigators received a tip about possible violations of the modern slavery statute in May 2022.
Organ procurement (also called organ harvesting) is a surgical procedure that removes organs or tissues for reuse, typically for organ transplantation.
