BREAKING: Peter Obi dumps PDP and withdraws from presidential race under PDP ahead of party primary

According to the latest information, Peter Obi has recently quit the People Democratic Party (PDP)

Mr Obi's resignation, which came on the eve of hotly contested presidential primaries, came amid fears that he would be humiliated at the Abuja convention.

He left on Wednesday evening, after learning of a gang plotting against him.

He did not reveal his next platform right away.

The incident is expected to draw even more attention to the PDP primaries this weekend in Abuja, where Mr Obi was considered as a front-runner in a battle that includes Atiku Abubakar, Nyesom Wike, Dele Momodu, Bukola Saraki, and other powerful figures.

A request for response from a PDP official was not immediately returned.

According to a person acquainted with the situation, Mr Obi was concerned that despite his great popularity and fame among ordinary Nigerians, he might not do well at the convention.

Obi announced his resignation in a letter to the party's National Chairman.

Obi explained his decision to resign from the presidential race in a letter seen by Newsfill.

Director General of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign Organisation, Dr. Doyin Okupe, made this public after submitting a copy of Obi’s resignation letter to the PDP National Secretariat, Abuja, on Wednesday.

He said, “Happenings” within the party currently does not give him the space to fully express himself.

The letter read, 

“Dear National Chairman,

“Resignation From Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Withdrawal From the Presidential Contest.

“I am writing to intimate you of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which was conveyed to the Chairman of Agulu Ward 2, Anaocha LGA Anambra, effective Friday 20 May, 2022. 

“Consequently, I am by this letter informing you of my withdrawal for the PDP Presidential Primaries.

“It has been a great honour to contribute to nation-building efforts through our party.

"Unfortunately, recent developments within our party make it practically impossible to continue participating and making such constructive contributions.

“Our national challenges are deep-seated and require that we each make profound sacrifices towards rescuing our country.

"My commitment to rescuing Nigeria remains firm, even if the route differs.

“I wish to thank you personally for your graciousness and leadership. I wish you well and best of luck in the service of country.

"Sincerely,

Peter Obi, CON.”
