19-year-old student murders ex-lover inside classroom

A 19-year-old student was arrested for fatally stabbing his former sweetheart, a 22-year-old high school student.

Tony Kiptoo, 19, of Keben secondary school, allegedly stabbed his ex-lover Irene Chelagat on the left side of her breast, killing her on the spot after she allegedly turned down his romantic advances, according to Kenya's Directorate of Criminal Investigation.

Chelagat was regarded by school administrators as a conscientious and hardworking student who excelled in his English class.

Kiptoo had premeditated Chelagat's murder, according to the DCI, because he had wished her "peace in death by inscribing the initials R.I.P on a photo later located in his cubicle."

According to the statement,

After a form three student murdered a classmate over a sour relationship, a community in Sosiot Kericho county has been thrown into mourning. Tony Kiptoo, 19, stabbed Irene Chelagat, 22, on the left side of her chest yesterday morning at Keben Secondary School, murdering her on the scene for declining his amorous overtures.

Kiptoo, who was determined to take Chelagat's life, smuggled a kitchen knife from home to school and carried out the heinous murder just as the morning classes began. As others screamed, enraged pupils swarmed on Kiptoo, drawing the attention of the on-duty teacher, Kenneth Korir, who was in the staff room preparing for the day's classes.

He dashed to the classroom and discovered the suspect being roughed up while other students attempted to help the victim, who was dripping blood. Chelagat was transported to Sosiot Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

According to preliminary inquiries by our detectives in Belgut, the two were in a love relationship that had since ended and the lady had moved on. Kiptoo, who had already wished his estranged fiancée peace in death by inscribing the initials R.I.P on a photo later discovered in his cubicle, carried his mother's vegetable knife and departed for school, the sorrow of rejection too hard to bear.

According to the deceased's classmates, Kiptoo was enraged when he learned that his former lover had found a new suitor who had subsequently purchased her a new smartphone. Mr Korir, who is still grieving over the death of one of his students, described Chelagat as a dedicated and hardworking student who excelled in his English classes.

Meanwhile, the murder suspect is in court, where investigators are seeking detention orders so that they can build a strong case against him.
