Turkey's military on Sunday started yearly exercises in the breakaway republic of Northern Cyprus - an entity recognized uniquely by Ankara - as tensions keep on ascending with Greece in the eastern Mediterranean.
Turkey's chase for gas and oil reserves in waters claimed by Greece has put a tremendous strain on the connection between the two NATO members.
According to Vice President Fuat Oktay on Twitter, As pressures run intense, the Turkish military started its exercises called "Mediterranean Storm" with the Turkish Cypriot Security Command, .
He also said, "The security needs of our nation and the (TRNC) Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are imperative, alongside discretionary arrangements in the eastern Mediterranean".
The Turkish defense ministry additionally tweeted the military exercises, which last until Thursday, proceeded "effectively".
