Kious Kelly, working at Manhattan hospital Mount Sania as an assistant nurse manager tested positive to corona virus on 18 March inline with a devastating text received by his sister Marya Patrice Sherron which reads:
“I’m okay. Don’t tell Mom and Dad. They’ll worry,”
According to her sister Sherron, that was his last message. She subsequently texts him but he never replied. In not more than a week he was dead.
Kelly may have been the first nurse to die from this virus in New York.
Co-Worker's were angry, some complained that they did not have adequate supply of protective cover and masks. According to "New York Times" A nurse who worked with Mr. Kelly said the hospital had offered nurses one plastic protective gown for an entire shift, though normal protocol required a change of gowns between interactions with infected patients.
Recently as March 10, he helped a nurse take off her protective gear after working with a patient who tested positive for the virus, the nurse said.
His family is planning to take his body home back to Michigan. “We know we can’t have a service anytime soon, but we want him home,” Ms. Sherron said. “He died alone. We want him home now.”
